Working Class Histories

Client: Historic England

A unique online mini-series exploring three working class history projects that have been supported by Historic England.

Challenge

Historic England supported a number of community projects via their Every Day Heritage programme, celebrating working-class histories.

To spotlight some of the stories, and lived experiences of working class people they approached Northern Heart to create three short documentaries, focusing on some of the best projects and most resonate stories.

Our unique approach

From the start it was important to us that we focused not just on the best stories, but the most diverse so we could demonstrate the wide breadth of projects that had been supported by Historic England’s programme.

After deciding on the three stories we created three unique approaches for each production, ensuring the films each had their own voice, tone and style.

Northern Heart collaborated with community groups and Historic England, helping manage the production over the course of roughly 12 months.

Results

Upon release each film had great success across Historic England’s social channels. In particular “Home of Metal” currently has over 50,000 views on Instagram.

“When I started working at Historic England, I didn't think I'd be making a film about Birmingham's Grindcore scene in the 80s, let alone one that features two members of the legendary band Napalm Death.

But why not? Heritage is for everyone, and just as Manchester and Liverpool proudly celebrate their music history, Birmingham is beginning to own its metal heritage.”

- Jack O’Halloran, Historic England

Northern Heart Films have been incredible to work with and I would strongly recommend them. They really capture the personable stories and the quality of the finished films are exceptional.
